I just had a minute for a quick post and wanted to let everyone know Orwell had another good birthday yesterday, still doing good, and wants me to let him outside right now so I better go before he tries to let himself out.

This is just a quick post to let everyone know Orwell passed away this morning, he turned 9 1/2 this week.  He had lost about 15 pounds over the last year, then about a month ago started bleeding from a tooth.  We took him into the vets office and they found his platelets and red blood cells were low, and ended up diagnosing him with terminal cancer which had spread throughout his body.  He was on supportive care taking prednisone and vitamin B supplements, and slowly became weaker and less energetic over the last 3-4 weeks, though was still playful, happy and showing no discomfort until yesterday when things took a sharp down turn, overnight his breathing was labored, and by this morning it was clear it was time to put him out of his suffering, so we took him to the vet's office, he could barely walk to the car and we had to help him get in and out of it.  It is hard to believe that less than 24 hours ago he was bouncing around on the bed wanting to play.  He passed away shortly after the vet gave him the initial sedative shot at just before 10 am this morning.

So sorry to hear that you have had to send Orwell over the Bridge.  It is a very hard thing to do, but knowing that they are finally out of pain helps.  Daegan started the same with nearly non-existent blood platelets.  But, they never did find the cause of her problem.

It was a hard thing to do, we wanted him to have as much good quality time as possible after the diagnosis, and not to suffer too long, with things going down so quickly his last 24 hours it made the decision simple.  I doubt he would have lasted more than a few more hours, we took him into the vets office at about 9 am the next morning after he had been bouncing around playing on the bed at 3 pm the previous afternoon.  He never showed any signs of pain, just lack of energy, weight loss, and in the end he became very picky on what he would eat, turning his nose up at anything other than good human food his last few days, his last meal was a chicken fried sirloin and mashed potatoes and gravy which he quickly ate on his final evening.  He passed away shortly after they gave him the first sedation / anesthesia shot so we did not have to get to the heart stopping shot point thankfully.

It sounds like he had a wonderful last night and a speedy trip to the Bridge.  That was good.

I have not checked in to the forum lately and sorry to hear or Orwell passing. My boy. Cruiser will be nine this Sunday and is slowing down. Dread the thought. They say time heals but it's still hard to take. According to Cruiser he was met with the Crew who proceeded him. No pain any running free. Again sorry for your loss.

I'm sorry to say but I am like Ed and haven't been on the forum too much lately.

So sorry to hear you lost your gentle giant but glad hear he had a peaceful passing.  He's up there with all the wonderful dogs who have passed before him and if he's anything like my Sierra and Sasha, they're enjoying their time just hanging out and watching the world go by and waiting for us to join them.
