Skin infections
« on: July 12, 2015, 09:50:40 AM »
Well Cruiser has had his first bacterial skin infection and the vet put him on 6000 MG of Cephalexin for ten days. He takes it along with his food so its no problem. Here is the part I would have never guessed for the shampoo.

Dawn anti-bacterial soap and mix with Head and Shoulders Shampoo. I mixed in a quart jug with a water.

1/8 cup anti-bacterial dawn soap
3 tablespoons head and shoulders
Pint of water

Lather up good and let stand for at least 10 minutes.  twice a week until it clears up.

I don't know if this would be a good concoction for routine baths or not but I will ask when I go back in about a week.
He sure smells good. No flaky skin just some redness.

He sure has shed some fur with this infection

Oh, poor pup!  He must be SO VERY ITCHY!!!!

That is quite a recipe for the shampoo!  I know some of the prescription shampoos are $$$, so I am so glad to see a more econpmical alternative.    Twice weekly baths, though!  What a chore!

Cruiser sure is well-loved!  Hope the infection clears up soon!

Update:

The skin infection is healing nicely and the fur is growing back. The soap concoction is great and its cheap, cheap cheap. Did I say cheap??  Must have spent a dollar and I have shampooed him 5 times and now he even likes it. Back to the infection.

Vet put him on  60 mg of prednisone for 5 days and then 30 mg for 5 days and the 30 mg every other day until gone.
I will say it for Cruiser that this is some nasty crap. He drinks tons of water and gets me up several times a night to whiz.

The vet said that the infection was a class 4, whatever that means, and said if it entered the blood stream it could be fatal.  Glad that was told to me after it was clearing up. Kinda hard to wrap my head around that.

I put a few pictures of his bath on his Flickr page.

Wow, that was some serious infection!  Glad you caught it and have treated it.  Daegan was on prednisone foe meany months with her leg infection.  She gained about 25 pounds.  Cruiser doesn't need that!  Mutant dog would become the HULK!!

Speaking of gaining weight from the meds its not happening. I looked at the two new pics on his flickr page and he looks like a skinny boy. Maybe around 160 lbs. I showed him his new pic and he asked who that was. I can assure everyone he will not gain or lose any weight. He is on a strict diet. 6-7 cups of Taste of the wild period. NO TREATS
I give him a few soft chews for his joints and he thinks that's a treat.

Good  plan.  We had to cut Daeg's feed back to 4-5 cups.  It took about 3 months after stopping the prednesone to get back to her svelte 170 pounds!  (She hated the diet, tried to eat anything that didn't move!!)

Update:

Cruisers skin infection is back with vengeance.  Took him to the vet last Saturday and they took 3 plugs out of his back. They were the size of a pencil eraser and a 1/4 inch deep. They also got 2 good blood samples to send off to see whats up. Had to laugh as they have a muzzle just for him and its PINK and of course he does not like it. He didn't eat for several days before the vet visit and sleep most of the time. He was still drinking plenty of water and peeing good. The bathing wasn't doing anything so we are now spraying him down with Chlorhexidine 2% (Nolvasan) everyday and just letting it dry on its own. He smells like a surgical room but the spots are becoming less evident and he has started to eat a little. The other day I added to big tablespoons of IAMS canned food to his dry food and he gobbles it down. So the eating part is solved now we just have to wait for the results of the tests from the lab.

Just as a side note I thought I might loose him as it scared me as he was not eating and sleeping all the time. No worries now as he is eating like normal and right now is barking at me for breakfast. Just hope the skin samples show nothing serious.

The damage to the wallet was $562 and change.

Glad he is back to eating.  AND glad you didn't loose your sweet boy!!!  So much affects their skin pH and allows a proliferation of flora and fauna.

Did they ever come up with anything definitive?

Cruiser has allergies for:
Beef, Corn,Rice,Carrots,potatoes
Bermuda Grass, Bahaia, Sweet Vernal, and all kinds of weeds
Mold and human dander, house dust, house fly, cotton and several more things
What a pisser this has caused with what to feed him. Been looking for hours.

He could be given shots to desensitize but I don't like that option.
So I have been spraying him down with Nolvasan every day. Cost $$$$
The vet gave me the name of chlorhexidine 2% that working great. So every morning around 10 he gets the squirt bottle spray down and we just hang out on the porch until he drys off.

The good news is the spraydown is working and the spots are cleared up and the fur is growing back.
